About 90 museums in Belarus accessible to people with disabilities

About 90 museums out of 115 in Belarus are accessible to people with disabilities, Belarusian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Petrishenko said at a meeting of the national interdepartmental council on disability affairs, BelTA has learned.

The event is hosted by the Belarusian State University of Physical Culture which has created an excellent infrastructure, including for Paralympians. Before the meeting the participants of the meeting got acquainted with the barrier-free environment in the Belarusian State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War. The meeting also discussed the development of inclusive tourism. The university is also hosting the exhibition "To See, Not Watching".

"The state is doing everything to ensure that people with disabilities do not feel deprived, infringed in their right to rest, to go in for sport," Igor Petrishenko said.

He noted that in the ten largest museums of the country have launched discount programs for people with disabilities: admission is either free or the prices are very low.

"About 90 museums out of 115 in Belarus are accessible to people with disabilities. We will continue to move toward, as is envisaged in the tourism development strategy until 2035," the deputy prime minister added. Certain events are also planned as part of the Hospitable Belarus program. This is important because an accessible environment significantly increases the tourist appeal of Minsk and regions for both its citizens and guests from abroad.

The National Interdepartmental Council on Disability Affairs at the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus was established in 2009. It is led by the deputy prime minister and comprises the heads of the national government bodies, central public organizations of disabled people and veterans.
